How to Vet a New Partner in ENM Before You're Emotionally In
Here's the timing problem nobody warns you about: the window where you're clear-headed enough to actually evaluate someone is short, and it closes fast. New Relationship Energy doesn't announce itself. It just quietly starts editing what you're willing to overlook.\
By the time most people notice a real red flag, they've already had three incredible dates, exchanged a hundred texts, and started imagining what this person adds to their life. At that point, "vetting" isn't really vetting anymore — it's talking yourself into something you've already decided you want.
So the actual skill isn't spotting red flags. It's asking the right questions early enough that your answers still mean something.
A few places to actually start — not a full checklist, just the ones people skip most:
Ask about their other relationships before you ask about you. How someone talks about existing partners tells you more than anything they'll say about their intentions with you. Listen for contempt, dismissiveness, or a pattern of every ex being "the crazy one." That's information, not gossip.
Ask what happens when they're upset, not just what happens when things are good. Anyone can be delightful during the honeymoon window. Ask directly: "What's it like when we disagree?" and watch whether they answer the actual question or redirect to how rarely they fight.
Ask about their relationship to agreements, theirs and other people's. Someone who talks casually about having broken agreements before, without real reflection on it, is telling you exactly how they'll handle yours.
Notice if you're the one doing all the vetting. Mutual vetting is a two-way conversation. If you're the only one asking real questions and they're just being charming in response, that's not a partnership starting — that's an audience.
The micro-action for tonight, if you're currently in the early-dating window with someone: write down, honestly, one question you've been avoiding asking them because you're afraid of the answer. That question is usually the actual vetting question. The rest is small talk.
This is a small slice of the full framework I teach — the Vetting with Intention Guide goes deeper into exactly what to ask and when, before NRE makes the answers stop mattering to you. And if you want to talk through a specific situation in real time, the Ethical Non-Monogamy Companion with Taylor K. Sparks is built for exactly that — a private AI coaching companion, not a chatbot or dating app. 100% private. Nothing shared. Nothing stored. Available in 10 languages.
