Lubricant – The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Lubricant can be bought in almost any corner store. In fact, often there are so many choices it’s overwhelming. How do you choose? It might seem like they’re all about the same. In fact, many sexual lubricants have ingredients that are hazardous to your health. Choosing the right lube is important not only for your sex life, but your general health as well.

Especially for women, choosing the right lubricant is important. The vulva and vagina are environments carefully regulated by the body. The introduction of a foreign substance can throw off the body’s ability to balance the environment. The vulva will absorb lubricant, for example. When lubricants have unhealthy chemicals, this can have far-reaching health consequences.

Many lubricants contain parabens. Parabens are synthetic chemicals designed to preserve the lubricant for longer. Parabens are sometimes mistaken by the body for hormones. When a woman’s body absorbs parabens from lubricant, the chemicals can mimic the effects of estrogen – which can be very harmful to breast health.

Glycerin and glucose are particularly bad for the vagina in an immediate way. You may have heard these words before – they are common sugars. Sugars can feed candida, or yeast. A small amount of candida is present in a healthy vagina. However, when candida over produces, this causes a yeast infection. Yeast infections are common and curable, but are incredibly uncomfortable.

Many lubricants also contain silicone oils. Silicone coats the skin, restricting the skin’s ability to breathe and increasing the likelihood of infection. Additionally, silicone lubricants can’t be used with silicone sex toys – it causes the toys to melt! If the toy is inside your body at the time, it’s definitely something you want to avoid.

These are only a few of the many unhealthy chemicals in popular lubricants. Fortunately, there are other alternatives. A good lube is water-based, and will prominently display that it’s fragrance, glycerin, and paraben free. Fresh organic coconut oil is an inexpensive alternative to commercial lubricant. If you’re looking for something a little more specialized, Organic Loven has many safe, healthy, effective sexual lubricants.
